I am having the delightful experience of reading a book called “An Organic Guide to Coaching and Training NLP” by Ed Percival and Colin Blundell.

Wow. This book is jaw-dropping brilliant. Check this out:

“ you have glided them into the material under their radar and over a bridge from something nearby and in the room. Then you have created anticipation in explaining the big picture.”

This is so packed with incredible information that was gleaned from 12 years of NLP trainings and coaching. I am shocked that this book is not an NLP bestseller. It is a true diamond-in-the-rough. I am already revising my current trainings to incorporate these accelerated learning principles.

Ed Percival said that they took the NLP trainings from 21 days down to 7 with these methods.

I don’t want to sleep or eat…I want to finish this book, and read it again!

“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

You are walking in the desert outside just outside of Las Vegas. It has just rained, and the air has the wonderful smell of chaparral (creosote). You notice the miniature bamboo-like plants called “Mormon tea” as you walk along. Weeds? Mere desert plants?

The chaparral plant has properties that can cleanse blood and have been known to affect tumors. It has been called the “medicine cabinet of the desert.” Mormon tea has been used as a decongestant.

What does this have to do with NLP?

Perception is everything.

Imagine driving down the road back in town with a friend. You are cruising along enjoying the day, the leaves falling from the trees, knowing in Vegas that you’ll see springtime by February. Someone ahead of you does a u-turn. You barely notice. However, your friend gets set-off on a tirade about people who do u-turns in unlawful places. He is pretty upset about this.

Same thing.

One person gets upset. One person barely notices. Did the car that executed the u-turn cause the friend to get upset? If so, why did the other person (you) hardly notice? (This is just for philosophical comment, you may indeed get upset at this type of driving behavior)

What’s the point of this? If one event can inspire two different reactions, then the reactions are optional choices.

The next time something annoys you, take a few steps back and a deep breath. Check inside your mind and see/feel how you arrived at being annoyed. What is your strategy? What do you see/hear feel first? Then what do you do inside of your mind? Step back and watch your strategy unfold and take note of it as if you were going to hire a temp person to do this for you if you went on vacation.

Not exciting? The doors to the greatest treasures are not the most fascinating.

It’s the holidays. Those special cookies are out at friend’s houses, family gatherings and at your office/place of business.

This year one of my brothers got that special brownie pan (on encouragement from my little nephew) that makes every brownie an “end piece.” Good thing he is on the other side of the country, and DON’T tell me where to get one!

Friends of mine made home-made candy and gave me this lovely package of it tied up with a ribbon. You tell me, how could you NOT have a piece…and let’s try this one, and of course THAT one…

My other brother sent us boxes of chocolate candy…well, it’s a gift…I have to have SOME, of course. Just one. Maybe another one. Just open the box and let’s watch this Santa movie!

As I sit here having eaten too much chocolate, home made candy and pecan and caramel popcorn I am amused by my own strategy. This morning I ”knew” I would not eat any sugar today. I was fine until the evening. What happened? And who out there says that an NLP Trainer has total control? Hello…Human here.

What was the first step down the spiral of overindulgence? It was before I made the brussel sprouts and served up the escarole and northern beans… I thought, “well, they made this candy and I really should try it, it was a gift…” So I had one. Then I had to try another… then we opened up the boxes of chocolate from my brother. And then, as my husband says, “fugedaboudit!”

So, rewind. Rewind to the actual first step in the strategy.

First I saw the candy

Second, the justification that to honor my friends’ hard work and love in making that candy, I have to eat some of it.

The third step in this stragety: I had some candy, what does it matter if I have more.

This progression is part of the reason we don’t have candy, chips and cookies in the house…unless it’s the holidays, of course.

What are you struggling with? What are your strategies? Can you find ways to interrupt them so you can have more choice of actions?

We all have strategies for everything from waking up in the morning, brushing our teeth, driving our cars, falling in love, getting in an argument with so-and-so, getting upset about (weight, money, love, the economy, etc) etc.

If you are looking for a way to short-circuit that strategy send me an email, there are very powerful ways to modify your strategies at a subconscious level. However, you have to WANT TO stop the strategy.

Thanks EA and BF for the wonderful home-made candy! You guys are awesome.

Nannette
